Plate Load Testing

A plate load test, conducted in accordance with British Standard BS 1377, is a geotechnical test method used to either determine the equivalent CBR (California Bearing Ratio) value for highways design or determine the bearing capacity and settlement characteristics of soils for foundation design, crane bases or pile mats (working platforms).

Obtaining the equivalent CBR (California Bearing Ratio) value is based on IAN73/06, which allows for the Modulus of Subgrade Reaction (K value) to be obtained and therefore the equivalent CBR value to be derived. This can assist with verification of earthworks and highways design.

BSL offer testing for plate sizes of 300mm, 450mm and 600mm diameters.

Lightweight Deflectometer (LWD) Testing

The LWD is a light weight portable tool used for measuring the deformation modulus and degree of compaction of subgrade/subsoils and unbound base layers, granular layers and backfill materials. Equivalent CBR values can be derived from the deformation modulus value obtained.  The zone of influence for the test typically extends to between 1 and 1.5 times the 300mm plate diameter.

This test is quick and easy to perform in the field, requiring no kentledge/reaction load as would be required for a plate load test and provides real-time data for on-site decision-making, ensuring compliance for earthworks and construction projects.

Concrete Coring

Concrete coring utilises an electrical rig mounted drill with a diamond tipped cutting barrel to cut a perfect round hole in any concrete or suitable masonry structure predominantly in floors and occasionally horizontally through walls. The process is low-noise, dust-free, non-percussive and is often used to facilitate further deeper drilling, alongside confirming existing floor slab or highways construction.

BSL can offer concrete coring services for core barrel sizes ranging between 50mm up to 450mm diameter.
